Wayfarer

A trip planner that keeps itineraries, maps and bookings available offline, wherever you are.

Overview

Wayfarer helps independent travellers plan trips day by day and keeps everything in one place: routes, reservations, notes and tickets. I led a team of three engineers building the iOS and Android apps from a shared codebase.

The challenge

Travellers lose signal at exactly the wrong moments, in metro stations, on mountain roads and on planes. An itinerary app that needs a connection to show you where your hotel is simply does not work.

What I built

  • An offline-first data layer on SQLite with background sync and conflict resolution between devices.
  • Downloadable map regions with vector tiles, keeping a whole city under 60 MB.
  • A booking inbox that turns confirmation emails into structured itinerary items.

Results

Wayfarer reached a 4.8 rating with more than 2,000 reviews, and crash-free sessions stayed above 99.7% through two major releases. The sync engine has since been reused in two other products.
